The Science of Tan-Through: Transparency, Sun Safety & Expectations
Welcome to the world of Qikini Tan-Through swimwear! Before you embark on your sunbathing journey, we would like to share the science and design details behind our Tan-Through fabric. This will help set realistic expectations so you can achieve a safe, natural, and seamless golden glow.
1. Why Is UV Permeability 50%–70%, Rather Than 100%?
In both physical principles and practical garment design, current tan-through swimwear on the market typically offers a UV permeability rate between 50% and 70%. Achieving 100% transparency is neither physically feasible nor safe for your skin.
Privacy Protection & Opacity (An Optical Trade-Off):
Tan-Through fabric works by utilizing a special weave with millions of microscopic pores that allow ultraviolet (UV) rays to pass through. If a fabric were 100% UV-permeable, it would also be completely transparent under visible light, failing the fundamental function of swimwear—providing privacy and coverage.
Physical Barrier of Seams, Edges & Elastic Bands:
Even with high fabric permeability, structural components like stitching, shoulder straps, and elastic hems are densely constructed to ensure stretch, strength, and durability. Because UV rays cannot easily penetrate these dense areas, subtle tan lines may naturally occur along seams and edges.
Health & Sun Safety:
Direct 100% UV exposure can easily lead to severe sunburn, redness, and peeling. Filtering out 30%–50% of UV rays serves as a healthy protective barrier for your skin, allowing you to develop a safer, smoother, and longer-lasting "Gradual Golden Glow."
2. Choosing Between Printed Patterns & Solid Colors: Privacy & Transparency Guide
To balance aesthetic style with varying privacy preferences, we apply distinct anti-see-through design approaches across our collections:

Printed Patterns — Recommended for Maximum Opacity & Coverage
Printed styles utilize the principle of Visual Illusion. High-saturation, complex abstract patterns distract the human eye, effectively creating a "UV can pass through, but eyes cannot see through" effect. Even under bright sunlight, printed designs provide excellent coverage so you can wear them with total confidence.

Solid Colors — Minimalist Style & Ultra-Lightweight
Solid-color styles offer a classic, elegant aesthetic. However, because solid fabrics lack the visual masking provided by patterns, they may appear slightly more sheer up close under direct, intense sunlight or when stretched significantly. If you prefer higher privacy, we recommend choosing printed patterns or pairing solid colors with our included invisible silicone nipple covers.
Wet vs. Dry Visual Differences
Tan-Through fabric experiences slight changes in visual opacity between dry and wet states. After swimming, we recommend drying off promptly to enjoy the fabric's ultra-quick-dry performance while maintaining optimal coverage.
3. Our Thoughtful Addition: Complimentary Invisible Silicone Nipple Covers
To accommodate different wearing habits and privacy needs, every order includes a complimentary pair of invisible silicone nipple covers:
Personalized Flexibility:
Every woman has a unique comfort level regarding privacy and sheer coverage. If you choose an unlined style and desire extra coverage or smoother lines in public settings (such as hotel pools or family gatherings), feel free to pair your swimsuit with these covers.
Note: The small area covered by the silicone pads will block UV rays entirely. Please choose whether to wear them based on your tanning goals for the day.
4. How to Achieve a "100% Seamless & Even" Golden Tan
Although swimwear fabric cannot be 100% UV permeable, you can easily bridge the gap and achieve a seamless, line-free tan with these handy tips:
Dynamic Shifting: Gently shift the position of your shoulder straps and stitched edges every 20 to 30 minutes while sunbathing. This softens fixed boundaries and naturally blends any potential tan lines.
The Sunscreen "Time-Lag" Technique: Apply a higher SPF sunscreen (e.g., SPF 30/50) to exposed skin, while applying a lower SPF sunscreen or tanning oil to the areas covered by your swimsuit. This slows down how fast exposed skin darkens, allowing covered skin to catch up for an even, flawless shade across your whole body.
Smart Timing for Sunbathing: Avoid peak UV hours between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM when sunlight is most intense. Opt for early morning or late afternoon sunbathing sessions instead. The gentler UV rays during these hours are easier to control, preventing sunburns and peeling while delivering a healthier, longer-lasting tan.
